I say "of course," because encaustic wax is my main medium of choice, though I do coloured pencil and a wee bit of graphite as well. I dabble in acrylics. Encaustic is where I started painting, and it's my "first love," so to speak.
What is it? It is painting with beeswax, basically. "Encaustic" simply means "to burn in," and in this day and age, we use heat guns, torches, hot pens, and irons to fuse each layer. (Encaustic has been around for thousands of years.) Because the wax can be layered with varying degrees of transluscence or opacity, there is the potential to build a great deal of depth in a painting. Wax is also very versatile...it is compatible with just about anything, with the exception of acrylics.
You can collage with it, sculpt it, make it smooth like glass, or textured. You can paint it on a canvas or board or a book, paper. You can put it over photos...seriously, it's nearly endless. I could spend the rest of my life working with this one medium!
